Reality consists of countless micro-situations that escape our gaze, missed, unnoticed and unrecorded, forgotten almost as soon as they appear. Information overwhelms reality, the pace of life accelerates, and it becomes increasingly difficult to pause and remain in the moment.<\/p>\n
Jelena Milatovi\u0107\u2019s charcoal drawings suggest and, paradoxically, unite this cycle of becoming and disappearing, creating a lasting, suspended moment by recording its transience. The ephemerality of these moments is both fascinating and unsettling. Moments that, through repetition, chance or deliberate choice, stand out from the stream of information, each time appearing as a different version of themselves, together with those lost forever, shape our sense of being in the world.<\/p>\n
By choosing subjects that ordinarily escape our attention, that we fail to notice and never return to, Jelena Milatovi\u0107 freezes a situation, translating it through exceptionally skilful, detailed and masterfully executed drawings. She records information we tend to overlook, depicting her figures from behind. They stand before us, intrigue us and obstruct our view. We know that their very presence communicates something to us, yet we do not know what they are conveying. Their gestures, eyes and facial expressions remain hidden, creating a tension and stillness that direct our gaze towards the surroundings, from which we read emotional states and into which we project our own thoughts and messages.<\/p>\n
The environments Jelena draws\u2014a living room filled with flowers or a hallway crowded with unusual objects and pictures\u2014are equally filled with information. They contain incongruities arising from unexpected combinations of objects within a space or from the merging of two spaces into one. Here, spaces filled with objects and flowers speak of care or neglect, attentiveness or abandonment, through the absence of their inhabitants.<\/p>\n
Transience seeps into these drawings through the very medium itself. Charcoal is a material that slips away, smudges and disappears, requiring fixation in order to remain on the surface. Fully embracing the ephemerality of details, atmospheres and fleeting emotions, the artist creates an ode to transience. Through large-scale drawings, she arrests the ordinary and everyday, revealing its atmospheric qualities and capturing what communicates through its own disappearance, thus quietly recording the neglected fabric of life.<\/p>\n

Jelena Milatovi\u0107 is a visual artist from Montenegro who lives and works in Belgrade, where she completed her undergraduate and master\u2019s studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts. She is the recipient of the Beta and Rista Vukanovi\u0107 Grand Award. Her practice explores the ways in which space speaks of identity and belonging. Working with interiors and everyday objects as her starting points, she traces the marks of human presence to reveal how personal experience remains embedded in our surroundings and changes over time.
